Technology and World Change - Week 9

In today’s lesson, the class discussed about energy and world change. This session has really surprised me to a very large extent because this is the first time I get to know about the different renewable energy available in the world.

Not only that, it creates my awareness about how much energy consumption and the impacts that it will bring us in the future. Although news and reporters have been mentioning and promoting about the action in energy saving to preserve the earth, but I never understand why such actions were necessary. Until the day of lesson, then I realize that the amount of energy that we human consumed is way beyond the amount we should have and it’s rapidly depleting the earth/ natural resources.

Therefore, some technologies are being formed aiming to resolve such an issue. I was actually interested to find out that certain countries has already incorporated quite unique policy whereby if their residents were too build those solar panels at their homes, they will get a certain amount of money. This is a very good strategy in terms of energy consumption and the promotion of renewable energy. With rewards, it motivates the people to be part of the plan and at the same time, it helps to generate more forms of renewable energy! Thus I feel that more countries should adopt such a strategy as well!

Due to the advancement of technology, there was also various forms renewable energy that was being presented in class. What caught my attention is the innovation that human had actually used the nature components and creates new forms of renewable energy. Till this day then I realize even man- made tornado is able to generate energy! However, unlike those offshore wind farms and solar panels, this man- made tornado creates a form of danger to those residents living around the area as tornado is a natural disaster which can cause death to many. The presentation of antimatter has also mention about the impact when the matter and antimatter are placed together. Although it has the capability of generating high levels of energy, we cannot neglect that its impact of being the same as 40 nuclear bombs. But this can actually bring power to any country that gets hold of it but it will of course endanger their residents if anything goes wrong. This led to me ponder if the risk is worth taking when lives might be sacrificed in the process of generating new energy.

Hence, I will like to rate this lesson 9/10 as it has brought my knowledge to a higher level as well as it is very thought provoking.
